365:294 High Risk Activity

I am still having a chuckle, but bear with me, it may take a few words or more to get there. Addison had his semi-annual dental check up today. Being the daughter of a dentist, a dentist who, btw, showed said daughter graphic videos of gum surgery as a scare tactic to ensure proper teeth maintenance, I have been feeling pretty cocky about  my son's perfectly cared for teeth. After all, I do know about caring for teeth, being a dentists daughter and all. Well...apparently, I am not the champion teeth caretaker I thought I was because Addison has an appointment coming up to fill some cavities. Finding out your child has cavities is a true disappointment. Especially when you do your best to do  all the things you are told to do for your child's teeth. There is one thing though. One enemy of the teeth that I can't seem to do anything about - night time lows. We have been having a spell of those these past few months and clearly all the night feeding of quick acting sugar has taken its toll. Today, our dentist referred to this night time feeding as a "high risk activity"! He wasn't telling me not to do it of course, just commenting that it could be a big contributor to Addison's cavities. Still, it made me chuckle to think of gently nudging a fruit bar down the throat of my sleeping, innocent looking chid in the midst of a low blood sugar as a "high risk activity". Ha!  So, I ordered up a kids sonicare toothbrush today and will arm myself with kids mouthwash too. We will brush longer and floss more and do our best to minimize our night time "high risk activities".

Ha! Who would've thought we were engaging our children in high risk activity during their sleep! :) Darn nighttime lows!!

we've had issues with this too, lucky for us we have an awesome pro-active dentist that special ordered these http://www.amazon.com/Xlear-Sparx-Berry-Xylitol-Candy/dp/B000QYKMGC
Now after a sweet nighttime check we give Isaac a few of these and it has curbed his poor baby teeth from getting demolished :)
BTW Addison looks super groovy in that dentist chair!

Sarah - interesting! how many carbs to those have?

aahahah! my first thought was that the real high risk activity would be NOT giving him carbs in the middle of the night if he needed it!

was he listening to some rockin tunes there? ;)

Great photo! What a cool child he is! Like everyone else, I do what I can with the juice and the teeth claning, but have to say beter alive with a few bad teeth than dead with a great set of gnashers!!!!!
We have friends whose little boy is younger than Addison and Frabk and whose boy is about to have SIX teeth extracted. he doesn't drink juice in the night and has a good diet. It's sometimes the luck of the draw, I imagine.

@Shannon - Addison's dentist has video screens above all the chairs..he was watching "How to Train Your Dragon" while getting his teeth cleaned! They also have them wear sunglasses to shield their eyes from the light they use to shine into the mouth. It is a funny sight to be sure!

@Jules - yes indeed! I know my husband had tons of cavities as a child due to soft teeth...something out of his control. Addison may have the same trouble..night time feeding is all the worse for that situation! And yes..I also say I would rather have a mouth full of cavities for Addison than no Addison at all!!

Ugh - I think of that every time we resort to candy rather than juice in the middle of the night. Good thing Addison's a brave kid, and cool about the Xylitol candy!
