365:286 Getting ConnecT1D, Giant Pink Bunnies & Zombie Proms

See that ninja right there? That is Addison at his Preschool Halloween Party last night. It was insane, I gotta tell ya. Kids in costumes, running amok high on a good time, pizza and sugary treats. Teacher Tom is truly the kids whisperer though. He managed to lead all the kids pied piper style to clean up all of their classroom and then have a super fun Halloween circle time with songs and stories. I was watching Addison have a blast and all of a sudden, I noticed that look on his face. I tried to take him out of the circle time to check his blood sugar but he refused NO! I don't want to miss this!! So, I made my way into the mass of kids to check blood sugars. 90, arrow straight down, a fair amount of insulin on board. I went to the treat table and returned to force feed some halloween cookie. All was good. This is new territory though. Being in a large group and keeping an eye on the ol' D. This is part of my new community though. And last night I was making some connections. I met another parent who happens to be on the preschool board and she asked about Addison's diabetes. She told me her mom has Type 1 so she has some understanding of what it is all about. She assured me that people  would step up and I would find some buddies to help care for Addison at school.

I have been thinking about community a lot lately and how important it is to me. I feel very fortunate to have a great community of people I feel connected to both here in Seattle and online. Having a community of people who understand diabetes and can be supportive is especially important to me.  I had the great honor this year to help out with a really important D community building project called ConnecT1D (pronounced connected). Started by a Seattle family, ConnecT1D is an interactive website meant to build support and community both online and off. It is currently geared towards people in the Seattle/Pacific NW region but they hope to expand it as the community grows. When I went to my first planning committee meeting, I was so moved and inspired by what they were doing. I also felt at home. Like I was truly with my people.  If you have a chance, go and check out ConnecT1D. It is a great place to connect with others and find out what is happening around town. It is for everyone..PWD, PCWD, Teens with T1 D, Athletes with  T1D...Go check it out!

If you live in Seattle, there is a fantastic even going on this Saturday Night - The School of Rock Zombie Prom! Organized by the group Rock Against Diabetes, this will be a super spooky fun night in Ballard that will not only rock your socks off but will also help to raise money for Rock Against Diabetes, ConnecT1D and The Pacific NW Diabetes Research Foundation. Good fun for a good cause and a great way to connect with the PNW T1D community. The link  above will take you to their facebook page with all the details.

Managing D in a group setting will get easier, I promise. Having such a supportive community will help.

It delights me that you are surrounded by such good support in Seattle. Yay for you! :)

You are rocking it! It is easy to get distracted with so much going on, but a mama knows...and a mama catches it!

Community is everything. I'm so glad you have one inside your computer, and out! And great job helping with the website! Knowing we aren't alone makes all the difference!
